We all want Fulla!
Despite the popularity and rave received by Fulla, it is quite a surprise to find out that she is not the first hijab wearing doll. In fact, an ample amount of other Islamically-themed dolls with darker hair and darker features were already in existence when Fulla was created. These dolls are also Muslim dolls that are intended to mirror the tradition of wearing the hijab when outdoors and ‘dressed-down’ when indoors. They also have a variety of hobbies and professions that young girls can relate to.
Fulla's Identity
To fortify its competitive situation, New Boy Design Studios took a number of steps towards creating the Fulla character and identity. Fulla has firstly, a slight advantage over her Muslim rivals.
She is a more “modern” doll that embodies the choices of Muslim girls today. She has a wider alternative of clothes that includes less customary items of clothing such as jeans and colorful scarves for the outdoors and more accessories such as furniture and jewelry.
As with the other Muslim dolls, Fulla is kind, charitable and loves and respects her family and friends.
Fulla Merchandise
New Boy Design Studios took the plunge in creating the next marketing dimension for its doll, by reproducing Fulla’s way of life in real life through merchandising. Instead of just designing humble attire for their doll, the creators brought Fulla to life with a full-blown pink personality.
Genuine life-sized Fulla scarves and prayer mats all in pink felt are accessible for Fulla fanatics. In the same way bicycles, frisbees swimming pool equipment schoolbags, chewing gum and even breakfast cereal carrying the Fulla name has been making the doll and her supplementary goods popular in countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Qatar.
Other Dolls
Though not the first of her kind, dolls previous to her were not nearly as triumphant There was a Moroccan Barbie once; and there have also been veiled dolls like Sara in Iran and Razanne in Britain. However, Fulla is the first concept-based example, as it were: most Egyptian parents and children alike can readily relate to it.
With all these factors, it is hard to figure out what exactly makes Fulla very popular, even with the emergence and presence of other dolls. It may be the character and values that she embodies, or the merchandise that the Fulla line has, but it is all undeniable – Fulla is popular, and there's no stopping her just yet!
