No Ken For Fulla

Fulla has captivated the hearts of plenty of children and parents not just in the Middle Eastern region but around the world as well. Actually designed like Barbie, but with a twist to meet Muslim needs, she can actually be described as Barbie's sister or cousin.

But unlike Barbie, Fulla does not have a romantic prospects. Fulla has no Mohammad or Abdul to match Barbie's Ken.

Why No Guy?
For the non – Muslim, you may wonder why there's no guy for Fulla. After all, she's a pretty doll. But for those practicing the Islam faith, one can easily understand why the makers of Fulla have not created a male counterpart for the doll.

Fulla has been created to live according to the ideals of Islam, and that includes the absence of any relationship with men before and outside of marriage. Since Fulla displays the image of a single woman, she should also stay single until she gets married.

Muslim Values
As she is designed primarily to become a role model for Islamic little girls, then Fulla embodies all the values and character that is socially required for women. She represents the societal image of the Muslim woman, and that is to act as the right citizen and follower of the rules and guidelines of their religion.

Aside from having no male counterpart, she is also portrayed as a conservative female with the way she dresses. The Fulla doll comes inside a pink box, and is garbed with the traditional Muslim outfit, which is the hijab and the abaya. She is created with lesser curves that are not also flaunted as well. But despite the conservativeness of the doll, she still has a fun side to her.

This is perhaps the main reason why parents and children lover her alike.

Modern Sensibilities

Despite her lack of a male partner, and her conservativeness, Fulla still hits it with children and pre teens because she incorporates modern touches like indoor fashion, colorful appropriate indoor fashion and the right accessories. While her lifestyle is oftentimes associated with fun, she still preserves her culture and values as well. Fulla still keeps her arms, elbows and knees covered, and she does not wear a bikini as well.

Because of this, there is no denying the Muslim parents are glad to purchase something for their little girls. Not only is Fulla a fun toy, it is a teaching and learning instrument all at once, and it reflects the right values and traits expected of an Islamic woman. Aside from being a sweet and nice girl, she is an educated one as well.

So, momentarily, Fulla is seen as a single woman, without any romantic prospects – and the makers aren't even sorry about it. The lack of a partner has not affected its sales, and has even perhaps boosted it.

But will she have a husband in the future? That idea is under speculation. We can only wait and see if ever that happens.
