Fulla- The Hijab Donning Doll
Fulla’s sensation to the Middle Eastern countries started when this doll was displayed over a hijab- a head scarf and an abaya- a long black dress that covers most part of the body.
Fulla and other Dolls
There have been a lot of other Islamic dolls who displayed their dolls in the Muslim traditional dress like that of the Fulla but no one has taken the front seat like how Fulla did. This is so because the Fulla- as a Hijab donning doll is not just that. She became a phenomenon because of its character. It is something that Arab parents and also their children would want to relate to because she has Muslim values.
Fulla doll is expensive compared to other Syrian dolls but that did not keep the parents from buying them. Children become obsessed with this doll and Arab parents who used to fear of buying their daughters Barbie doll, are more comfortable and happier to pay for their kids Fulla dolls.
Fulla Vs. Barbie
Fulla is unlike the liberated Barbie. She is a conservative and modest doll which displays the likely image of a Muslim woman. Something that parents would want to instill to their children- preservation of tradition and keeping their values even with other strong influences coming from the west.
This hijab donning doll is not restricted to use other clothes and so with that the New Boy Designs creator has created a line of accessories and clothes for Fulla. Her accessories now even extended to jewelries making her more enjoyable than ever.
Some of her accessories and merchandise would include swimming pool accessories, a watch, and camera, CD player, school handbag, breakfast cereal, chewing gum, inflatable chairs and so many more. Her outdoor dresses are even made more fun with a touch of different colors, but then still keeping her values on top. She has no bikini wear and her shirts always cover her shoulders and her skirts should fall below her knees.
Along with her hijab are her values in mind. Fulla is loving, honest, caring to everyone, respects her parents and mostly has a respect for her self. What is even more unique to this doll is that she is an emblem of a Muslim woman and holds tradition and culture displayed on her image. She is created in a way that she can instill values to the Islamic little girls.
Fulla also encourages them to educate themselves and has two careers, a doctor and a teacher. Arab parents believe that these are two respectable careers that woman should aspire in the near future. By this, she influences every little girl who plays with her to take on her life and change the world into a better place soon.
So there is really something more to Fulla than just her donning a hijab. She is unlike the many dolls who are so concerned about their image and sexuality. An icon, a girls dream doll and a doll that influences little girls but in a very good way. Fulla is definitely a miniature of a Muslim woman whom parents would want to see in their children as they live the life of an Arab woman. Not your ordinary fashionable doll- Fulla.
