Fulla, Noor and Bader: Let’s Meet the Family
One of the most important aspects of Islamic culture and tradition is the esteem given to family. The ideal daughter is prayerful, respectful, modest, loving and generous. The sons are expected to learn how to conduct themselves in a manner which will bring honor and high regard to their family. Parents are expected to light their children’s way and guide them to being responsible, productive and healthy citizens and Muslims.
No Background Yet
When Fulla first came out she had no such background and although it was established early on that she was all the things mentioned above that Muslim daughters were expected to be, it was only with the addition of her brother Bader and sister Noor that they were able to portray this with any persuasive value. Finally, Fulla had a family she could call her own.
The addition of the two children to the Fulla merchandise world created a new appreciation for the toy. Now girls are able to see and practice how sibling relationships in their culture should be. Fulla is a loving older sister and Bader and Noor are obedient and dutiful siblings.
Like a regular family, they each have unique characteristics all their own.
Meet the Family
Fulla was initially marketed portrayed with dark hair and auburn streaks. She wears her hair long and down her back in most cases. She prefers dressing in long skirts or slacks and long sleeved tops while at home with her family or friends. For outdoors she dons a traditional head scarf (in pink of course) and a long pastel coat or black abaya. She enjoys shopping and hanging out with her friends.
Noor, the little sister, has straight light brown hair usually up in pigtails set high on her head. Noor prefers cute little dresses that fall just beneath her knees and Asian-inspired wrap tops for comfort and style. She likes it when her shoes match whatever outfit she has on. She is shaping up to be as fashionable as the big sister she idolizes.
Bader, the little brother, enjoys participating in athletics and physical activity. To emphasize this aspect of his personality, the developers of Fulla have dressed him in sporty attire including shirts that remind one of baseball and sailing, to showcase a few of the many activities he could be involved in.
The Three Musketeers
The three siblings are leading the way in the Islamic toy world in matters of fashion and hipness. For little girls this is a prime opportunity to begin honing their maternal instinct and parenting skills. Fulla is a learning tool that has been well-placed and well-marketed to portray a brand identity that Muslims can relate to with ease. The dolls are clear-eyed and fresh-faced and are portrayed to lead lives that are as full and as well-rounded as possible.
Fulla and her siblings are a good gift to present one’s daughter or niece today as the recent saturation of the toy market with Western toys promoting Western values are bringing the youth further away from the Islamic ideals that Fulla upholds. With her brother and sister in tow, there is hope for more awareness regarding Muslim values and practices in the youth today. Finally, the choice to play with toys which promote good Islamic values is available to little girls everywhere.
